Writers Group

Last week, I skipped my Thursday post because I was meeting with my new writers group.

This is a newly-formed group that came out of a combination of an existing MeetUp group and talking with other posters on the NaNoWriMo regional forum. Since this is my first in-person writers group and we spent a lot of the time discussing what we wanted from the get-togethers, I’m not sure yet what to think.

My initial thoughts are that discussing the craft of writing with others will be valuable. I think it’s also going to be difficult – the nature of this group will mean that different people are constantly coming and going. It’s hard for me to share my writing sometimes and I’m trying to decide if the rotation of people will be good (less emotional investment in the feedback of strangers so I will find it easier to accept) or bad (less security with a group I don’t know well).

We meet again next Thursday and we’re supposed to bring a few pages to share and ask for feedback. I’m not sure yet what I’ll take because I just finished going through my 2007 NaNo story yesterday. Today, I plan to start reworking the plot and characters. I’m not sure if I’ll have anything ready for next week or not but it is nice to feel like already it’s lighting a bit of a fire under me to keep moving forward.
